Category: damn they don’t make em like this anymore

“I shed a lot of stuff, a lot of unnecessary weight in the last three or four years. I left a lot of old luggage behind, and when I did, the blessings just started pouring on me, and the light in my spirit started to lift again.” -Whitney, Ebony, October 2009
With a voice that gives you chills and makes her whole face sweat, Whitney Houston is one of the greatest balladeers in the history of music, missteps and all. She’ll be on Oprah’s season premiere on Sept. 14 & 15 in a two-part interview. The new songs are cool, but these are some jewels.
“Greatest Love Of All”
“Exhale (Shoop, Shoop)”
“Where Do Broken Hearts Go?”
Music was my refuge. I could crawl into the space between the notes and curl my back to loneliness. -Maya Angelou

Marvin Gaye, “Where Are We Going?”

“If I Could Build My Whole World Around You”
One of my fav Jay-Z songs ever. He…doesn’t sound like this anymore, and he looks like Kanye. Guy I dated in high school used to play this in his car on repeat, when there was nothin’ to do. And the tension got too thick for his sober mind to cut through…
Jay-Z, “Feelin It”
He kept dreamin’
That someday he’d be a star
But he sure found out the hard way
That dreams don’t always come true
So he pawned all his hopes
and he even sold his old car
Bought a one way ticket back
To the life he once knew

I neglected the following song, here
Why him? Cause he’s abstract like me. but I know exactly what he means. this song’s about love I guess but it doesn’t have to be (didn’t mean for that to rhyme). it can just be life. you can quit, you can always give up, or you can try. since you only get one of these things. that we know of anyway.
UPDATE: Maxwell Returns. So Do the Giant Panties
I was reborn when I was broken
I wouldn’t believe, I wouldn’t believe, no
been through a storm, no use in hoping
that you would come rescue me
somehow your love set me free
And I, I can let my life pass me by
or I can get down and try
work it all out this lifetime
work it on out this time
I can let it all pass me by
or I can get down and try
work it all out this lifetime lifetime
There was a time
when love wasn’t chosen
now I’m just open for more
now I’m just reaching out
for something better than I had before, girl
there ain’t a bottom line in your world
Ooh and I, I can let my life pass me by
or I can get down and try
work it all out this lifetime
work it on out this time
I can let it all pass me by
or I can just try and try
I can move to the light
oh if I take it one day at a time (oh I)
oh spread my love out and fly
oh I (I can move to the light)
ooh I can just make you understand
that love is not a fairytale in a melody
if you want it you can have it girl
maybe you will see
this chick is just dope. where is she.
Sade “Smooth Operator“
Diamond life, lover boy
We move in space with minimum waste and maximum joy
City lights and business nights
When you require streetcar desire for higher heights
No place for beginners or sensitive hearts
When sentiment is left to chance
No place to be ending but somewhere to start

Always loved this song. the beat is soul. never truly listened to the lyrics until I read this article in New York Mag on Gil Scott-Heron: The Weary Blue (“He’s lost weight recently; his black jeans barely hang on to his hips. He still smokes, Marlboro Reds.”) Kanye sampled the song on late registration. I mean, I can’t relate to the lyrics, not directly, but. i stopped reading midway through, when it got to the part about “home.” had to listen.

Home is Where the Hatred Is
A junkie walking through the twilight
I’m on my way home
I left three days ago, but no one seems to know i’m gone
Home is where the hatred is
Home is filled with pain and it,
might not be such a bad idea if i never, never went home again
stand as far away from me as you can and ask me why
hang on to your rosary beads
close your eyes to watch me die
you keep saying, kick it, quit it, kick it, quit it
God, but did you ever try
to turn your sick soul inside out
so that the world, so that the world
can watch you die
home is where i live inside my white powder dreams
home was once an empty vacuum that’s filled now with my silent screams
home is where the needle marks
try to heal my broken heart
and it might not be such a bad idea if i never, if i never went home again
home again
