I Deserve This

061809_drake

If I like an artist, I like ‘em. Hype doesn’t deter me unless said artist blows. Some people might say that about Drake, but I don’t really care to hate on him just because everyone else is pushing him. You can’t deny his craft and wit. Wrote about him recently in a piece to come. In the meantime, this beat, by Tha Bizness, knocks. As someone who always had my nose in the books while everyone else’s was in the dirt, I can so relate. A bit of modesty with a small pat on the back and a dash of keep-it-moving

Look at where I’m is, it’s only just begun
‘Cause I was stayin’ home when they was havin’ fun
So please don’t be surprised when they announce that I won

Okay I do it for the love
Bunk bed flow, always one level above
If I’m in your starting five, you will never need a sub
And I’m never lookin’ down, so I always know wassup
A lotta people sayin’ fuck me
Problem is, they be tellin’ everybody but me
But I always got a Starbucks verse bein’ brewed too hot
Please, please double cup me
They never gave me support like Chuck Ts
And I never trust a nigga sayin ‘trust me’
Nick Cannon and Will never did it this ill
So you tell the house band, don’t you dare interrupt me

No trace, no residual feelings

“Pretty Wings” is the first single from Maxwell’s loooong awaited upcoming album Black Summer’s Night and it’s classic Maxwell – a sensual rhythm that seems to let his throaty vocals fold right in. The song’s concept is similar to Donell Jones’ “Where I Wanna Be” – I’m not the man for you. some other will love you better.

time will bring the real end of our trial
one day they’ll be no remnants
no trace, no residual feelings within ya
one day you won’t remember me

your face will be the reason i smile
but i will not see what i cannot have forever
i’ll always love ya
i hope you feel the same

oh you played me dirty, your game was so bad
you toyed with my affliction, had to fill out my prescription
found the remedy
i had to set you free

away from me
to see clearly the way that love can be
when you are not with me
i had to leave, i have to live
i had to lead, i had to live

if i cant have you let love set you free
to fly your pretty wings around
pretty wings your pretty wings
your pretty wings around

Nas is like…

nas1

See Nas’ verse on Rick Ross’ “Usual Suspects.” (a couple lines are unclear) That type of writing…you just have to have it

And still my talent is yet to be challenged
Had no jet with my own pilot
No blastin’ off with Flex and DJ Khaled
My mom stressin’ college
But my crude sense of logic did allude to my empty wallet
Try spending on a green tinted Accord
Which could mean a sentence up North
Where the homie was, but back then dough was like a whore that goldie love, it didn’t exist
And officer foley cuffs was after my wrists
Was not Beverly Hills where we chilled
Imagine this, the Nasareth
Had to get from rags to rich
I used to stand on rooftops with two glocks
Figurin’ how do I turn my Timbalands to guap
Now reptiles was left out up out a watch
What is you thinkin’? Murk you, plus the muscle that you bringin’ is nothin’ to me
If you thuggin’ or fake and shanked on Cuban
Shout out my Ricans
Dealt with all of you gangstas, from the roughest Jamaicans and Haitians

Yep! Can’t get over this song. Ryan Leslie has been working on his solo album for a while. A few years back, I spoke to him for a Cassie feature I wrote for Billboard, my ex-employer. Background: He’s a Bad Boy songwriter/producer who went to Harvard and helmed the majority of Cassie’s alright debut. Initially I pegged him as another lame behind-the-scenes sunglasses-indoors type of guy trying to merge into Ne-Yo’s lane. He might still be lame (look at him), but he’s pretty darn talented, plays a bunch of instruments, and, since I’m trying to curb my usage of “dope,” his album is nice. Having worked at Billboard and seen what types of songs have hit potential, and just having a good ear in general in my humble opinion, I’m campaigning for this song “Gibberish” to be a single. It’s great despite the use of AutoTune, which is beyond spoiled milk at this point. Using a pitch-perfecting tool to sing unintelligible, imperfect, lyrics is smart guy stuff. Album out Tuesday.

“Time is running out/Please don’t, baby wait…”

Strangled by the wishes I begged for
Hoping for the unmade for

The Definition of Love

I guess Avant is too ordinary to be a superstar but, like Joe, he has some nice relationship songs. Here’s a new one.

Avant, “When It Hurts”

When it hurts, will we still be…the same two lovers, all over each other?
When it hurts, will we still see…why we got together, promise that we’ll never
Be temporary, ordinary
We should change people’s definition of love
So forget what you heard, the only way that this will work
is if you love me when it hurts

No time for negative vibes

The first time I heard Mary J. Blige’s “Just Fine” I chuckled at her newfound happiness. It seemed sort of disease-ish. “I’m fine fine fine fine fine fine, woooo!” Like, wow, she’s really happy? Skepticism later turned into awe. Wow, she’s really happy... “Gonna live my life, feels so good to get it right.” I had to be, also, for her.

If that boy don’t love you by now…

Despite a voice as exciting as rising dough, the idea of this song, I’m digging…

This is just for Jay-Z’s wow verse. he was letting me down lately but thanks Hov. dope. or maybe it’s just me…

“Go Hard Remix”

I drown my pain in Porsches
I lost my partner to the bullshit
Still tryna hold on to my religious soul,
I put a couple diamonds in the corpses
close your eyes, see the darkness
thats what it’s like where I’m from
No lawyers, no doctors
So either I go the hardest or I could just call this a night
on dark nights it’s like I see better,
On Dark Knights, I’m like Heath Ledger

Prelude to a Kiss

Sometimes I feel
like I don’t belong anywhere

and it’s gonna take so long

for me to get somewhere

sometimes I feel so heavy hearted

but I can’t explain, cause I’m so guarded

but that’s a lonely road to travel

and a heavy load to bear
